The Dana 30 will hold up :) Just get a rear... try a Ford 8.8 too. Junkyard has them for like $250 with diskbrakes... If you can find it

no 8.8 after thinking about it, i would rather build a bigger axle and not have hte c clip and not have my ds offset i would rather go with like a 60 or something

a 9 inch isn't bad i gotta figure out something, pretty much whatever is going to come out cheaper but provide me with the best is what im going to do.
i will no go cheap just for it to break and be the wrong thing, i would rather spend the money

ohh and no pro rock crap for me, its great stuff but nothing i need.

so anyone, anyone bueller, anyone anyone bueller i need AXLES!!!!!

you better be thinking 35" tires or bigger if you want to have any kind of ground clearance with a 60. either that or we're gonna nickname you matt "the farmer" for all the plowing you're gonna be doing.

Oh yea forgot to post... WTF you need a 60 for? I am planning on 35s on my YJ and I am just going to get a 44 out of a junk yard and rebuild it. Or an 8.8 for disc brakes. Have you seen a 60? Look at the rear of f-250s or something. The punkin is HUGE :). Just trying to help, I hope. But if you want to dump your money into it. Go for it, have fun!

The 8.8 will be just as strong as a 44, if not stronger. Only real weak spot if the studded axle tubes. Weld the tubes to the punkin and you're good to go. As far as it being a c-clip, you still gotta break the shafts before needing to be concerned about that. See shaft info below. I could be completely off base here, but you own an XJ, right? If so, the minimally offset rear diff will not be problem because of the LWB.

I pulled these numbers from another board:

COT: Continuous output torque rating
MOT: Maximum output torque rating
Numbers from January edition of Fourwheeler, page 60.

Dana 35 rear axle COT: 870 MOT: 3480
Dana 44 rear axle COT: 1100 MOT: 4460
Ford 8.8 28spline COT: 1250 MOT: 4600
Ford 8.8 31spline COT: 1360 MOT: 5100
Dana60 semifloat COT: 1500 MOT: 5500

...just some food for though...

Nice information. Makes me want to put forth a harder find for an 8.8 with 31 splines :D.

makes me glad i just picked up a 8.8 with 31 splines, you cant beat the cost + the disc brakes + the almost same ground clearance as the 44 :D check out car-parts.com they always have 31s 8.8's in ny for like 200-250 and since you can weld (ill even let you use my welder) you can set it all up yourself

the almost same ground clearance as the 44 :D

check out Nailer's thread over on JF about shaving his 8.8 sometime. he picked up another 2" of clearance on his IIRC.

Yup, I am thinking about doing that. I like what he did with his YJ. Flexs like no other. Hes also a really nice guy.

You guys missed the important part of that article that there was a correction made later on. that d60 they were comparing the 8.8 to was a SEMI float like out of a car with 30 splines. garbage. what most people didn't see was the specs for the full floater 35 spline axle cot was 1950 and mot 8850. so you see the real dana 60 is way stronger than that ford 8.8

Good point. I was mainly posting it as a comparison to the 44. If he's only planning on running 35-37, the 8.8 is a pretty solid choice, c-clip or not.
