Did some quick searching and found this:
'97 got all the new goodies of the re-design.
'98s got a quieter steering gear and aluminum rad.
'99s got distributor-less ignition, Sentry Key anti-theft system, and an improved intake manifold for the 4.0.
"all cherokees except for 00-01 have a HP30. I've seen 1 broken 8.25 shaft... and the guy was running 37's and a detroit. You can always upgrade to some alloy shafts and you should be more than fine for 35's."
'00s got the shorter roof rack, the low-pinion D30 front diff (boo!), a strengthened block and the optional 5-speed manual for the 4.0.
'01s got child seat tether anchors.
All are good buys, cheap, capable and very reliable. Some folks prefer the '99 because it has the distributor-less ignition but not the low-pinion diff
