View Full Version : Shocks and mounts
I am thinking to get more flex and while I am getting new shocks to get longers ones and move my shock mounts higher. My goal is to make all the parts and stuff myself weld it up and be happy. I saw MORE front hoops and I want to basically duplicate them. Possible purchase a cheap manual tubing bender. But for the rear I saw MORE had some other kit that basically moves the mount higher. But I was thinking can I do the same thing as the front with the back? Cut off the shock perches that hang low anyway and move then to the side and mount the shock on the outside of the frame or? I thought I saw it done my NAILER341 on JF but his site is down and thats where I thought I saw it. If you have pictures or any ideas post them. Thanks! 8)

hey if you need a welder to use, i could trade ya some welding time for some welding lessons lol  i wanna make some pin bar elims out of some flat stock, but not having a clue on how to weld good enough i dont trust it.

There's probably a million ways to do it. But if your creative and dont have a tubing bender look for Stuff at a scrapyard or junkyard that has the right size tubing and bends that you need and cut it up and weld it together.(just make sure you dont get thinwall conduit) Here's the ones I made for my ford:

I see a couple of problems with what you are looking to do. first a longer shock will give you more travel but only when the shock is the limiting factor. Then you want to raise the shock mounts in the rear on the axle. thats ok for ground clearence but don't get longer shocks because you just made the distance between both the upper and lower mounts closer than they were. (If any thing you should in theory need shorter shocks.)That will give you more droop but less compression. If I were you I would take off all your shocks flex up the truck and measure. see if the measure ments you get for you shock is longer than the shocks fully extended. I would measure under compression and full droop.
If you are looking for some quick outns for longer shocks if you need them F-250 front upper mounts work well. They are cheap even new from ford
I dont know if I want to move the shock mount to the top of the axle for that reason. Maybe just move it more parell to the ground because now they droop down and they bang rocks and cath lots of stuff from water crossings. I am doing all this because my shocks are terrible. The front is ok but the rear is really bad. The shock is upside down beause thats the only way it would fit. That could be part of the reason plus I dont get much flex. When I do all this I am goign to pull the rear track bar and for the front fab up a quick disconnect for it.

If thats the way they fit I can get you some foam fill shocks that will runin any position w/ built in bump stops.
Rember you get stablity the further out board your shocks are mounted on the axle. I usualy try to get the center of the lower bolt on the center line of the axle tube. this will help aid in the length of your shock and keep it clear from the rocks.
