So I was looking into mabey an aftermarket bumper for the XJ I dont have yet, you know thinking ahead when I saw a price tag for 700 dollars and fell right the hell out of my chair!

for a simple steel plate bumper? I thought well, no worries I must have just got the wrong company or something let me look some more..... next bumper 500 dollars- glad I was still on the ground, I did'nt have far to fall this time-

I mean I was looking for a simple replacement bumper for the plastic junk that comes on the XJ in its stock form, thinking mabey 300 bucks max-

for thoes prices I'll buy a small wirefeed for 300 bucks and 200 bucks of steel and make my own shit! I need a welder anyway. :wtg:

for less than 200 in steel i built a front and rear with swing out bumper. not wimpy stuff used 3/16 wall tubing all around, and 3/4 thick shackle mounts front and rear. i still have about 8 ft of 2x2 3/16 left.
it can be done

I said the same thing 20 years ago and have probably saved myself thousands of dollars not to mention all the money it has made me fabbing stuff for other people. Although the cheap welder only lasted a couple of years it did teach me how to weld. When I bought a good welder and started layin down beads I said hey I really can weld.
Oh yea, If you look around at the pic's in the gallery atleast 5 or 6 guys on this board have built their own bumpers. When I first joined this group almost evrybody on it had built their own front bumper and since I had built mine also I figured I must have landed in the right place.

rocklizardfabrications.com has the best bumper for the money, xj bumpers are expensive for some reason.

I would buy a hanson or a protofab before that rocklizard. The finish and craftsmanship are far superior to that rocklizard bumper. I have a ProtoFab and it is quality I used it in NEUROC 2 years now.

http://www.rigidco.com/FbW.htm this bumper is the shit, looks really nice with the light bar which i have, pretty cheap at like 500 bucks too, which is on the low end for a whinch bumper. The mounting system is top notch as are the instructions.

Very poor welds on that you can see them in the pic. Also mountin system is a liitle weak looking.

i can deffs say that i've seen this bumper (ridigco) in bare form and the welds are neither crappy and the mounting system is definitely not wimpy. He replaces the entire bulkhead and also uses a mounting system that goes back into the frame rails to transfer the pull throughout the truck.

the bulk head mount is by FAR the best one i have seen, i have this bumper on my truck, and if you would like to take a look at it joe your more then welcome to, but i would go out on the limb to say this is one of the strongest bumper/mounting that they make out there, and terry is an awesome guy to deal with.

I will check it out next time I see it but the pictures on the site does not impress me the welds look poor and it looks like it mounts to sheet metal with way to many bolts.
