WTH happened at gonzookin' 05 ?????

This was the one yearly event that I was really excited about making it to. I really am into the Samurai Thing. I spent alot of time feverishly working towards getting bad II ready for this event..:?

I have had this theory for some time now and have now found proof that I am right...:?

It does not matter What TYPE of rig you are wheeling. It is WHO you are wheeling it with. If you like Chevy's Fords or Jeeps It doesn't matter.. Choose the GROUP you are most interested in wheeling with...

I was sooooo. disappointed... I don't think I'll ever waste my time on this event again. I have missed some of these events in the recent past and heard some stories. Now I know that some of them are true.

Let me just say,

TRI - STATE RULES

We all owe a big thank you to Xeon for all of the effort that he puts forth into these events..

Remember... Xeon does this by himself every month not once a year... I hope all of you members realize the work that goes into this and how well organized he really is... :!:

We need to be more helpfull and certanly more thankfull...

Also, I think some of our members are far more dedicated towards helping out than we give credit to ( you all know who you are ).

Here is a short story of how my day went yesterday.. And why I appreciate TRI-STATE so much.

06-04-05 Badzook and Passenger

The day started out real slowly with some early morning drizzle.. The line to register at the trailer was long and slow. It took 45 minutes to get to the resistration desk.. The line was out the door and all the way down to the parking lot...Most people were there for for the Jeep crowd not Zooks.

After waiting for 45 minutes to register ( it was now 8:30am ) I was told to come back at 9:30 as the Gonzookin' group was not registering yet. I flipped out on the clerk as I wasn't going to the end of that line again... There were no Gonzookin' 05 officers of organizers there. They finally decided to take that info but wouldn't accept my money yet.. They said to hook-up with an Gonzookin officer to pay up... :?: After looking for one for awhile I gave up and went back in to pay and just go wheeling. I said Screw their discount..

While I was in there an Gonzookin' 05 officer finally shows up and while he was conversing with the PAP official I realized they weren't going to get any discounts and they did not follow the rules. Heck, the officer didn't even know who in their group was responsible for organizing this thing.. What a Mess !!!

At the staging area things were worse yet..It was slow and there was no orginization at all. Only about 30 or so rigs showed up. There were no Trail Leaders available. We just appointed some people right there to lead us but they didn't know the park at all...We didn't actually hit the trails until almost 11:00 am !! We were pretty annoyed at that.. We just spent 3 hours waiting around for nothing.

After finally organizing a group of 7 rigs to run the intermediate trails We finally got started. Then, we just sat and waited on the trails for other groups to move along... After awhile we were directed onto Whompum a Blue 3. It should have been marked as a black. No intermediate rigs were doing this trail period...

It was too difficult and was only for the heavily modified rigs to be on, although there were some go arounds. It was backed up by a Jeep group who had a lot of rigs. We turned around and headed back down..

Damn it... Again no orginization...

Jon and I broke away from the pack and went to visit the spot where I lost badzook 1 last winter. The pics tell the story. Now I know why I couldn't get my rig out. That stuff is sticky muck and the hole I was in was a little deep. The water/ice level at that time was deeper than this.. . My shoes were sticking to the muck and my feet were pulling out of them..

http://www.tri-state4x4.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_61.JPG

We decided to find a group that was running the lighter trails and wheel with them. After awhile we finally hooked up with 3 other rigs. The day finally started to take shape...We wheeled Rabbit Run it was a black 1 and boy it was tough..Thank gawd we were going down and not up. So much for light trails. At this point I was having some trouble with my 4wd and couldn't use it much..My front diff lost it's pinion setting and was free turning about 1/4 turn ( Ouch )...

http://www.tri-state4x4.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_47.JPG

We did manage to salvage the day with some wheeling but were pretty disappointed at the orginization of the event. We decided not to camp over because that would probably be a disaster as well. Also, we didn't want spend the night wrenching on my rig just to wait around and maybe go wheeling a little bit the next day.

There are a few more pics of this event ( on Saturday only ) posted in my gallery. Not alot of pics were taken. We were busy turning our wheels

To summarize....

It takes the help of all involved to make these events happen. Gonzookin' 05 is an example of a failure to communticate and share responsibilities.

For most of us our personal lives are very busy. My free time is very limited and I'm not interested in wasting it on Mismanaged events like this one was.

Although, I can not attend every TRI - STATE Event ( but will try to make it to some of them... ) I can however pitch in some just like the rest of us can.

When Tri - State holds an event .........

Take notice that Xeon is always there on time. He patiently awaits for all of us who has signed up to arrive. He meets with us early on during these events organizes the groups and gets us out on the trail in a timely fashion. He is doing this by himself !!!!!

Folks, This is the way it's supposed to be.... Thank you Xeon...For a person who is new to all of this you are doing a GREAT job...

I think we have an excellent Group assembled here at TRI - STATE and would rather put forth my efforts hare on this forum towards making it better for all involved..

Please feel free to offer a little of your free time to help with organization these events for all of us to enjoy. Remember you reap what you sew. If you want to wheel you have to pitch in.. Not just show - up and tag along...

If each person puts in just a little bit...in the end we all get alot out of it...

I just took 2 hours of my time to put this together for you all to enjoy. There is my contribution for this week... What will yours be???

We need someone to help aid in getting stickers made up at a reasonable cost and how about some business cards???

Your comments Positive or Negative are welcomed...

I was speaking with NYWHEELER last weekend and i was talking to him about getting the same size flyers made up that clubs do. we can get some pics on them and what we can do is everytime we see a lifted or nice rig we can go put one on it. i think if we all chip in about 5 to 7 bucks we can get some nice ones made up. there have been alot of times where i have told people about us but u never see those people join. i think this would help alot. i would love to organize this but i have no idea where to start. tell me what everyone thinks.

I think Justin started a great idea by e-mailing all members when the ride becomes official. It brings back some members that have not visited this site in a while. He started that last month and we had a good turn out of about 14 rigs and this months ride looks like we are going to have a great turn out also. If we keep up the e-mails we should keep some members coming back that have not been on this site in awhile. I have no problem meeting up with any members if they want to sit down and discuss som new ideas face to face. Just name the place and keep it on a weekend and I have no problem.

Keep up the good work! :wtg:

Rodnee,
I didn't even know you were there. It's too bad too. I wanted to see you. Could you please e-mail me before you bash us anymore so you can hear our side.
I am sorry you felt this way and wish you had made it to the campground with us for the big Raffle and Dinner. Maybe we could have used your critsisms to learn some of our new staff. I was unable to goto the patk for medical reasons which were spoke about numerous times in posts on several of the suzuki boards besides the fact that I didn't have a rig.
One of our biggest problems with holding a Suzuki event is trail leaders. With Paragon charging $150 per day per guide it is not feesible to pay for them. Most of the people that attend this event come once a year and try to follow the maps. We all no that Turtle trail and Valley road can change from week to week depending on erosion. both are supose to be stocker trails.
If anyone from tristate could volunteer to guide for next years event we would love to have you. Maybe even discount your entry a bit too. This could Help solve the problem Rodney is talking about.
The next problem with a group like this is TIME. With a tight group like yourselves from a three or four state radius you all have the same general routines and time flow. When working with a larger more general group of people it gets more difficult to get them to flow together to be in the same place at the same time. I have tried be there at 8AM meaning 9am, 8:30 meaning 8:30, 8 to get them there by 10 but nothing works you are always waiting for people. It is one of the biggest PIA's

Rodnee remember critcism is good, we can learn from it. please don't rule us out for next year. If you had a bad time help us make it better.

We now have a good set staff of 5 and could use more going into next years event. We are moving it into August and will not have it on a Monthly ride weekend. We now have a bank account and are more official. and this only happened a few weeks ago.

Just so you know, It is illegal in most municipalities to put fliers on vehicles and can result in a fine if caught doing it. Tri - State does not support this idea nor will we promote it this way.

However, we are thinking of making up business cards with the link on it .

This shouldn't be a problem so long as you guys don't get carried away with it.. And don't put them out in front of the courthouse either.. LOL.

Yes it is very bad to put fliers out liek that. It will end up making us look bad. I think we are doign well telling people about it and having them find it on there own. Just last week when we went down the Pines I meet this guy in a Cherokee with 35's. Asked him where some good trails where and forwarded our site to him. I think we will see him again :). Anyway its better to talk to a person then leavign fliers on tehre trucks. You never know it could be a cop or some law person. Just becareful I dotn want our group to sound bad.

Rod,

Thanks for all the thanks! I really apreciate it! I dont have a problem working on this stuff. But latly been running out of time. Just because I am graduating soon and working on getting a job. Thank you Rod for helping me so much to get this great site moving. You did all the hard work I had no idea on. You also taught me a lot. I have never learned so much in a couple months. Now I know when people talk about its all about experience and not just education from a school. Thats is why I am really not goign to college. I am goign a tech school to learn all the goods. As for offroading I have learned lots and seen that there are really some great people out there. Just about everyone I have meet with Tri-State I have had a great time. Learned lots and I love talking and hearing stories. Keep it up!

Anyway maybe in the summer some time some of us can get together and start talking about getting the group alittle more organized. I really need people to take a tally and keep a spreadsheet on a computer of who has come and there contact information. Sometimes people dont get the emails and maybe some phone calls to the people that love to come but dont really get emails and dont go on site much. Like Donny (Plumb Craz) I now have his number and his freind with a computer signed up to let him know when we are wheeling. I am not the most organized and sometimes I get lazy. Also if anyone or a group of people want to purchase a large banner. That will be awesome. I was goign to get a quote but if anyone knows someone that can hook us up let me know. I will make the design or someone else can work on that and we can voet on it.

Lots of typing... boy I am pooped

of we can get an info sheet made up and have people actually fill them out when we go on a run then I can come up with a spreadsheet for it. I've pretty good with databases and spreadsheets.

hey justin what size banner did you have in mind? i know of a sign company i useto do computer work for, that i think would either do it real cheap or maybe even donate it to our group. They might have some old banner left over that they can use or something. Lemme know on a size and how complicated of a banner you had in mind and ill stop by and ask them about it. I could also ask about getting a batch of stickers made since i remember you saying you were out of them. Let me know

I have one of those sheets and lots of copies made. Just never really get around to have people fill them out. If people remember from the first wheeling trip they had to fill out a paper. I will start making sure I get people to fill them out.

I dont know about a size but a decent sign that can be read from a good distance :). As for stickers I am going to send one last email to the guy who did it last time then I will gather all the files and start getting quotes. And if someone wants to help I will send them the files.

ill try to swing by there sometime this week and get some prices from them on what they think it would cost, then ill let you know if its cheaper then we can get them through them, plus they are local in little ferry so its easy for me to pickup/get more.

Also i think for this ride we should try and really do what al suggested for the last ride, set up groups before we get there so there isnt all that confusion in the play area with whos going where and with who.

like al said

Stock group *trail leader-

mild group *trail leader-
matt
Dave

wild group *trail leader-

that would really help out with hitting the trails earlier. I hopefully going up friday night to camp so i can be at the park by 8am so i can watch that damn video then im able to be a trail leader i want to do mostly blues maybe a black one tops so i could lead the mild group or matt could he is going to come with me.

I'd suggest not meeting in the play area. I would meet in one of the 2 staging areas. The only reason I found the group was because I have been to the park many times and knew exactly how to get to the play area. IF you don't have a map, and have never been there, the play area is not an intuitive area to go to.

WTH happened at gonzookin' 05 ?????

This was the one yearly event that I was really excited about making it to. I really am into the Samurai Thing. I spent alot of time feverishly working towards getting bad II ready for this event..:?

Restaffing a normally year long planned event with one month before game time doesnt help.

It does not matter What TYPE of rig you are wheeling. It is WHO you are wheeling it with. If you like Chevy's Fords or Jeeps It doesn't matter.. Choose the GROUP you are most interested in wheeling with...

This is very true. I had a great time wheelin with the tri-state group. I also have a good time wheelin with the zuk crowd too. That is one of the reasons I left the bronco crowd. Things got too political and people were not focusing on wheelin.

I was sooooo. disappointed... I don't think I'll ever waste my time on this event again. I have missed some of these events in the recent past and heard some stories. Now I know that some of them are true.

I would love to hear some of these stories through PM or email!! Maybe our staff can look at them and perhaps it will help us get better for next year.

We all owe a big thank you to Xeon for all of the effort that he puts forth into these events..

Remember... Xeon does this by himself every month not once a year... I hope all of you members realize the work that goes into this and how well organized he really is... :!:

THANKS JUSTIN!!! It is a great deal of work to do something like this. But also realize this. So far all the monthly rides are just that. a bunch of guys getting together who for the most part know each other and are wheelin for just one day. This leaves the only planning to splitting up the different groups and goin wheeling. This is only a half of our event. We not only tried to do this planning (read above..new staff) but we also worked out a group rate with paragon based on a certian number of rigs to register, organized a group dinner for 50-60 people, put together a raffle, and worked out camping arraingments for the whole group. all this within a month and with new staff.

Also, I think some of our members are far more dedicated towards helping out than we give credit to ( you all know who you are ).

This is very true and holds true through any organization. I think rather then making the comment of "you all know who you are" you should list them so we can thank them for their efforts!!!

While I was in there an Gonzookin' 05 officer finally shows up and while he was conversing with the PAP official I realized they weren't going to get any discounts and they did not follow the rules. Heck, the officer didn't even know who in their group was responsible for organizing this thing.. What a Mess !!!

Alot of this was due to the fact that Paragon told us at the last minute we were to register for 10am instead of the posted 9am due to the monthly ride. the monthly ride was a much larger group then gonzookin. we had no control over that. Not to mention the intenerary was posted on the www.gonzookin.com website. Everyone was to meet at the campground before going to the park incase of last minute changes.

We just spent 3 hours waiting around for nothing.

this we do apologize for. Again it is new staff and lack of trail leaders as luvmyzuki posted earlier. I helped Dan lead the one group of stockers and we had a great time! I also helped lead a tri-state group in april and we also had a good time.

After finally organizing a group of 7 rigs to run the intermediate trails We finally got started. Then, we just sat and waited on the trails for other groups to move along... After awhile we were directed onto Whompum a Blue 3. It should have been marked as a black. No intermediate rigs were doing this trail period...

Again as jeff posted erosion can change a trail from month to month. again thats a popular trail for the monthly ride because of the close proximity to the 101 area

It was too difficult and was only for the heavily modified rigs to be on, although there were some go arounds. It was backed up by a Jeep group who had a lot of rigs. We turned around and headed back down..

I can understand that. Nothing sucks worse then having to wait for another group.

Damn it... Again no orginization...

how so? elaborate! This will only help us get more organized for next year!

Jon and I broke away from the pack and went to visit the spot where I lost badzook 1 last winter. The pics tell the story. Now I know why I couldn't get my rig out. At this point I was having some trouble with my 4wd and couldn't use it much..My front diff lost it's pinion setting and was free turning about 1/4 turn ( Ouch )...

I know the t-case feeling. ask bill and scott about our trip to st. clair the other weekend. I was having problems with my mounting bolts comeing loose and the t-case moveing on me and not staying in 4x4. one time my shifter even jumped the rails and locked me out of 4wd. my next investment is a trail tough mighty kong bucket.

We did manage to salvage the day with some wheeling but were pretty disappointed at the orginization of the event. We decided not to camp over because that would probably be a disaster as well. Also, we didn't want spend the night wrenching on my rig just to wait around and maybe go wheeling a little bit the next day.

You should have come to the campground. we had a great time with the raffle and the dinner. both went very well!!! I was actuallly hoping you would cause i wanted to meet ya in person! I always like meeting the faces i keep seeing in the pics on the boards!

There are a few more pics of this event ( on Saturday only ) posted in my gallery. Not alot of pics were taken. We were busy turning our wheels

turning wheels is a good thing!!

To summarize....

It takes the help of all involved to make these events happen. Gonzookin' 05 is an example of a failure to communticate and share responsibilities.

Actually the failure to communicate was just for the trail rides. again...re-staffing a month before the event helped with that. Remember there is a learning curve for everything. All the organizers were pretty much new when it came right down to it and no time to properly plan doesnt help. This will change for next year. There were a bunch of good ideas thrown into the mix and planning is going to startt in the next 2 or 3 weeks for next years event. With a solid and dedicated staff we be able to make it much better. not to mention there has been talks about moving the event to august to help avoid the bad weather.

For most of us our personal lives are very busy. My free time is very limited and I'm not interested in wasting it on Mismanaged events like this one was.

Mine is very busy as well and my weekends are normally planned out for me. I went and hardly wheeled and still had a great time. An event is what you make of it.

Although, I can not attend every TRI - STATE Event ( but will try to make it to some of them... ) I can however pitch in some just like the rest of us can.

Same here. I am going to sit through the video so i can be a regular trail guide for the group.

When Tri - State holds an event .........

Take notice that Xeon is always there on time. He patiently awaits for all of us who has signed up to arrive. He meets with us early on during these events organizes the groups and gets us out on the trail in a timely fashion. He is doing this by himself !!!!!

again im not bashing tri-state or justin but a one day monthly ride is a totally different aniumal then a 3 day event. one or two main people can organize a one day ride with out a huge amount of difficultly. Remember, If it involves people....something will go wrong. If im not mistaken on the april ride we ended up with one huge group of people and one small group because a few people were supposed to go with the small group and didnt listen or were confused

.... Thank you Xeon...For a person who is new to all of this you are doing a GREAT job...

mentioned above but thanks again!

I think we have an excellent Group assembled here at TRI - STATE and would rather put forth my efforts hare on this forum towards making it better for all involved..

Tri-state is a good group. Its nice to have a group like this where you can wheel with more then one make. It helps you see the advantages and disadvantages of others rig and have a good time doing it. I dont mind putting in some effort myself.

Please feel free to offer a little of your free time to help with organization these events for all of us to enjoy. Remember you reap what you sew. If you want to wheel you have to pitch in.. Not just show - up and tag along...

I know ive tried to do what i can. but sometimes its just nice to just go wheelin.

If each person puts in just a little bit...in the end we all get alot out of it...

This is a VERY true statement and I agree with you 125%

Your comments Positive or Negative are welcomed...

badzook

Ok You have seen my comments both positive and negative. I think there could have been some stuff handled better but again...With a new staff in place with one event under their belt it cant do nothing but get better. Much of the issues you addressed were starting to be discussed in the campground.

However It might have been better to send your comments and concerns directly to the gonzookin staff. If we dont hear that stuff we cant improve the process.

I dont think its right to bash our event just to make tri-state look golden. there have been some rocky issues with tri-state also. I dont want to make this a pissing contest because I do like what tri-state has going. It is evolving just like gonzookin is evolving.

The originators of gonzookin had their own peronal issues that really limited their participation for this year and things suffered because of it. I personally am not holding that against anyone. Instead I stepped up to help with the event planning. This also pretty much meant giving up wheeling for this weekend. The only wheeling I did was as a ride along with Dan as a trail guide/navigator.

The rest of my weekend was spent setting up camp friday night...the little bit of a ride along on saturday and prepping for dinner and then cooking burgers and dogs(for an hour after the 2 hours of setup) for the group dinner while trent made wings and jeff helped with placement and other things. then sunday i didnt even make it to paragon. I had to help clean up from the dinner and raffle and break camp.

We lost our sponsorship within the week before gonzookin so we were unable to have the TZC due to unwarranted issues posted by the sponsor. So we will be looking for another one for next year.

I am not complaining about not wheeling. In fact even if i bring my zook to gonzookin next year ill prolly let my wife wheel it most of the weekend so i can stay to help with the other duties. I enjoyed my self quite a bit actually! It was nice to have a chance to socialize with the people attending rather then just out running around.

Again! and positives or negative dont be afraid to contact any of the staff as it will only help us get better. !!

Last tri-state trip we had everything from stock rigs to very modified rigs. Experienced drivers and first timers. After taking some time signing in and getting organized we were at the play area deciding how to divide into groups When we kinda said screw it and all went as one big group. We wheeled green and blue trails. We ran some easy trails which looked like it gave a couple of new guys some confidence, Some tougher trails so everybody got to do some real wheeling and the new guys got to learn some Technique’s, and a couple of alternate loops to keep the modified rigs from getting bored.
Normally a large group with such a varying degree of rigs/drivers is a recipie for disaster and disapointment, but in the end we were not very organized, we got lost, we had a few breakdowns and it looked like everybody had a GREAT TIME! Especially me.
