Hey guys, figured i'd throw this one out there and see if anyone was a plumbing guru. I've been toying with the idea of making a snorkel for the jeep. I've already got a mini one but it still lets water in on occaision and that water pools up in the airbox. knowing that when it rains I'd be getting water in the box if I go full snorkel i was trying to figure out a good way to seperate the water out when it dawned on me i could add a check valve at the bottom of the air box or somewhere before that in a trap configuration to get rid of and water coming in, but keep the rest out for water crossings. My question is at what pressure does a normal, off the shelf check valve open, say maybe 1.5"? if i scooped it full of water on the upstream side, would it open on its own, or does it require the pressure of a pump to get water flowing? Any thoughts?

what about a full snorckle that has a 180 turn in the very to to prevent rain from geting in it?

Not that this is an answer to your question but.... Have you ever seen the bottom of an airbox on a quad or dirtbike... They use a piece of clear hose that is cutoff and moulded flat. There is a slit in the bottom. It acts as a check valve and lets water out but collapses under vacuum to seal the box off...
Do you know what I mean??? It's a thought... After all they paid those silly engineers alot of dough to figure that one out..
Just a thought............

yeah, i know what you're talking about Bad. problem with that though is that they're known to clog up quick. I've got a suzuki 500 (not running at the moment) that had one and after i spent the day running through puddles i was cleaning it up and happened to open the box to check and the whole thing was half full of water. after that i pulled that piece off and let it drain. I'm looking at this from a stand point of "put it at the lowest point where the water will collect, but if i do that it's gotta be one way because chances are it's gonna end up totally submerged at some point."
wrangler, you mean put a 180 bend at the intake end so you suck air upwards? or put in like a drain trap somewhere lower? the first might work if you point it right, but even if you face it backwards the induction effect will sweep the spray of a heavy rain in and it will accumulate in the low points of the system. the second one won't work without some sort of drain because the water will eventually pool up on both halves of the trap and block the air flow.

i ment so u suck air upwards
Nick,
Here is what I am thinking about making. I am thinking about making a gehetto snorkel out of PVC. Just dril a HUGE hole in the tub and make it like Donnys (Plub Crazy). And make it removable like Badzook I had. I liked the idea and it will work great when I need it. Maybe think about that I am sure I can dig up some images of Donnys truck and Bads got his image in his gallery. :D
Here is an ok picture. Click on it and zoom in to see it closer. I am thinking about doing it.

what about making 2 180 bends...1 so ur sucking air up and another benth the filter to trap water. if u make a valve on the bottom one you could let the water out if wate starts to bock the ait flow.
