Pine Barrens, New Jersey - Wharton State Forest

"Far south of New York's hustle and bustle, nestled inside Burlington and Atlantic counties lays Wharton State forest. Wharton is the largest single tract of land in the New Jersey Park System, with over 110,000 acres of land. Most of the sugar sand trails in the forest are technically considered unimproved dirt roads. According to the park service, over 500 miles of these unimproved roads wind thought the pines, in between the bogs, and over cool cedar creeks. For those of us who enjoy fresh air, great scenery, and the opportunity to catch a glimpse at native wildlife, Wharton offers the perfect chance to get away." - Source:  Pine Barrens Cleanup 2004 Report (http://www.off-road.com/suzuki/features/pinebarrons04/)

I've been there At Batsto Village... Better stop at the Park Headquarers and get some maps... I quickly became lost but had a GPS & Maps to figure it all out... It's a cool place. It is so big it would make a great overnite Camping Trip... We'll have to keep this in mind...

There is a reason I am the Kingofthepines. We have runs all the time. Personally I wait until the ice is gone but there are a lot of brave (foolish) wheelers on my board that are still going out. I used to wheel down there all the time. Mostly in Lebanon St Forest off rt 72 and Presidential Lakes off 70. I went to George's property off Lacey Rd one Memorial day, but it was just a drunken mud fest. Theres miles and miles of trails down there but its all sand and mud, theres a few cool hillclimbs though. I never got hasseled by the law, but I havent been down there since 1/02 but I'm sure none of it is legal now

I prefer rocks now

From what I have been told you cant even go on George's property anymore.

Thats what I've heard too, but I havent been down there in years. There wasnt much there anyway, just a couple sand/mud pits to get stuck in and ruin every bearing and seal on your rig

Ages ago, my wife and I canoed down a river in the Pine Barrens, It snaked alot and took us about 3 hours time at a normal rowing pace. Does anyone know how to access that river? We got turned on to it by some friends from Toms River.

Flendo, the NJ Pine Barrens are really an under-rated place to see. Winter or summer, they are the best kept secret of the state of NJ.

Anyone interested in an " Unofficial Trip " wheeling the Pine Barrens ?

I'm going to Wharton State Forest on April 9 it's a Saturday

Oh and Yes, It's legal wheeling there. Just make sure your rig is properly registered and insured and meets NJ Lift Laws. The DEC officers will check..

Let me know...

Yes,

Wharton State Forest is legal with a ton of sandy and watery roads.. It would take days to cover it all..
I've wheeled here and it is really cool... and very legal...

Maybe we should do our campout here instead.. It's worth the trip...

the pines are a great place to go. we just came back and everyone had a great time. when we go again we definately got to get a site where the showers are. anyone who went on this weekends run will tell you it would be alot better to wash off the crust after a great day of wheeling  ALL HAIL TRI-STATE 4X4
