View Full Version : Great time guys (April Ride)
I dont know about you but I had a blast. Meet a bunch of great people. Got to get my rig stuck pretty good a few times. Got it all muddy but on the ride home it washed away :(. I really wanted to wheel with the other guys and talk to them but no one showed at the Play area at 1:30 :(. We were there alittle after 1:30. We had some nice stucks and lots of good laughs. Cant wait for next trip! Nice meeting all you

Same here Justin. Our group had a great time with Freebird leading the way. We had a couple of pull outs and little damage, but overall a great day. We planned on making it to the play area for lunch, but just couldn't make it there on time after one of our trails took a little longer than anticipated.

I had a great time as well, so did my passenger. It was the first time for both of us, and for my Jeep (Silver Unlimited). Unfortunately, Kevin my passenger forgot to bring his camera. So, if anyone has pictures or video of me and my Jeep I and my wife would greatly appreciate it if you could e-mail it to me. My e-mail address is ryan141 at gmail.com. Oh, and I will bring my own camera next time; I was even thinking about mounting a camcorder inside my Jeep so that we could record the trail ride from the passegners perspective. TIA

I just wanted to thank everyone for a great time at Paragon. It was the first time I met anyone from the forum and I must say I was very pleased on how freindly and helpful everyone was. TRI-STATE members are a great group of people from all walks of life.
It was great to to "POP" the cherry on my Rubi, I even broke the 500 mile marker yesturday. My passenger (Joe) also wanted me to thank all of you for a great time.
When fueling up for the ride home we noticed that my tires were real low, I had not checked them since the vehicle was 2 weeks old, but I was running only 15 PSI in them for some reason. The minute I filled them up we (Silver Unlimited and Myself) noticed a change in ride height. I am hoping this was the cause for the skid plate to keep slamming into every rock. I can't wait to try those trails again and see if I have such a hard time again.
Either way, I would like to THANK all of you again for the wonderul experience.

yep we kind of got sidetracked!! turtle trail turned out to be pretty technical for the rigs we had with us but was a blast!
i need to sit and watch the paragon video so at least i will be official as a trail leader...unfortunatly my friend steve was trying to read a map and wheel at the same time and it wasnt working too well. my friend galen and i took over leading the group. still ended up making some wrong turns but at least we didnt follow the 4 wheeler trails hhahahahahahaha
i tried getting you guys on 12 and 14 but noone would answer any of us in our group. justin you got to message me on aol sometime and give me your cell number so next time i can get ahold of you guys.
i got a few small things i need to do before the may run but all in all i had a great time!!!!!
i am really liking that 4.89:1 tcase gear set i got. i can pretty much put it in 4low and 1st or second gear and idle over 90% of everything. bill will tell you he saw very little of my break lights.
scott, all you need is a rear locker and that thing would rock!!! you guys did a great job driving on the trail and i would love to get the group back together at the may run. maybe we can hit some of the lower trails next time.
bill, yes sliders are in order for that pig. but i still have to say im impressed for what you were doing. that cherokee had a nice amount of flex..not to mention got to love wheelin with power everything and leather seats!
chris, gears man!!! even a set of 4.10's in that thing would help. you did a great job and stayed with us and really didnt need much guiding through everything.
the three guys that came with me....jerry,dave, and steve all did a decent job of wheelin. i think i have have steve talked into a rear locker for his 4 runner..and jerry into a set of sway bar disconnects and knobby tires..

Yep, good times yesterday. I would have to say it was a successful run. Good seeing you guys again. All I have to say is that I think we can all agree (atleast the people in my group) that OBA is a great mod and it proved very useful yesterday.

Freebird, you guys were running turtle up or down? i assume up since the stockers ran it down with little trouble. i imagine running it back up would be interesting. lockers are definitely worth the money though. this was my first real test with my new aussie up front and i have to say it made a huge difference. we ran a particularly nasty hill climb coming off trail 40 to get back to the main byway that mine just walked right up. it helped that i was one of the first up it i'm sure, since the trail just got worse the more rigs that went through it. but i don't think i had to rev past 1500 in 1st to get up anything.
bondo, definitely going to be doing OBA for mine in the near future. was already planning on it, but seeing yours in action makes me want to do it even more :D
If you guys have pictures from the ride. Please email them to me so I can post on the site. jcxeon@gmail.com is my email.

Our day started by going around the bunny loop...then we took the whole length of turtle trail down (before 12:30). then we went down by the mineshaft and turned around...then we got on the service road and too 38 back toward the top of the park. we then came to the service road and took it across the park and ran the middle section of doe run (saw a heard of deer in there) then took the valley road back to the beginning of the park.
turtle going down was pretty interesting. i was amazed on the amount of grip you got on the rocks even though they were wet.
yep lockers are a huge difference. i only have a rear locker in mine and i have to say i made a lot of the stuff look easy because of that. in may i want to take a group down to the bottom and run the muddy pipeline bypass (blue 2) . or possible good bad and ugly (green 3)
Heres my favorite pic before I got stuck there...

think you're thinking of someone else since i was with Justin's group. this is my rig, posing on the big rock over in the play area:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v608/sentinal02/Misc%20Jeep%20Pics/BigRock3.jpg
Justin's pic is on trail 36. we overshot 40 and had to loop back around after taking the bypass to go around this trench. here's a couple more of him halfway through it:

we ran the first branch of turtle you come to off of 3 just past the play area. IIRC from the last time i was there, the later branch is the tougher of the two before they meet back up later on. i know we split the group into two groups there, with the ones who wanted the easier path taking the one we were on. from there we ran 32 to 36 to 40. rather than run the loop off 41 to 39 back to 36, we decided to take the little side trail where 40 meets 41 back up to the main road. that last 100 ft or so took us an hour to get everyone up. after lunch we ran 25 before half of the group (myself included) bailed. not sure what the rest of them did after we left.
how deep was that mud pit there? i ran it the first time i went to PAP and it was halfway up my door panels  kinda wanted to test my mini snorkel on it but oh well. we found others:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v608/sentinal02/Misc%20Jeep%20Pics/Puddle.jpg
next time i'd like to take the logging road out to the far side of the park and loop back through that pit. there's a blue trail out there (86) that I've wanted to try, but haven't wanted to risk my frame on. now that it's patched I'd like to challenge it. the trails out there are a nice challanging path for the stockers too.

from the way it sounds. i bet we were chasing each other most of the day. that sounds almost like the route we ran.
that mud pit was about the top of my tires and that was it.this summer im re-doing my hood and loosing the hood scoop and building a snorkle!

i want to say we saw the silver dodge that was with us just before we hit turtle. the reason you couldn't raise us on the radio though was because we switched to 7 after we started picking up some chatter from someone else.
the snorkle on mine is just an extra 6" of PVC built off the airbox. on the YJ, the intake is set to pull from just below the headlights, so i capped that and piped a couple elbows upward to just below the hood pointing to the rear to avoid splashes. 5 bucks and an hour later and i was done. worked out nicely i think. the filter never got wet.
Justin, I'll be sending the rest of mine as soon as i finish resizing them. if you want the full sized pics I have of you let me know and i'll send them as well.

I was in the group with the big jeeps (Me, Rob and Tim). We ran Whompum 2 with the huge ledge, Pitfall, Q-trail then went over to Pipe Bender and played on the Neuroc's course. We all got some trail rash and had a good time. Rob lost a bead and bent up one of his soft doors, Tim punched a hole in his rear Dana 44 cover, I bent my tie rod and a waggy spring (flattened right out) but there was no serious damage.
I might go to Paragon next Sunday and I want to hit Raucsh soon
Yea we saw you when we passed to the left on trial 25. I was liek wow thats nuts... :D.

get those track bars loose for the next run. we'll disco them along with the sway bars and then you'll do even better. even stock though, the jeep will surprise you with what it can do. first time i went to PAP i had 235's and sagging springs and i said the same thing. we ran pretty much the same route as we did before lunch (minus that hill climb) and the jeep just kept right on going. i did need a pull at one point up a pretty steep, loose dirt hill, but other than that it went over everything. glad ya got the pump fixed :D

Whats the track bar? BTW how much do quick conect swaybars cost...they were hell to get back on. I cant leave them off because it feels like its gona flip when i get going 70 on the high way.
Thanks,

Depends on what you get. My JKS (aka pain in the ass to put back on) were $45 open box. JKS makes them, TeraFlex, Rubicon Express, and lots of others. Hope this helps!
Track bars are thebars that keep your axle lined up with the Jeep. You can take them out but it becomes a safty issue on the road. I did not take mine out and I flex very good with new springs. I will be making disconnects for them when I get a welder though... :)

take a look here. the track bar isn't shown but the place were it mounts up is. take a look at yours and you'll see the extra bar that's not in the pic:
http://www.geocities.com/silentsentinal/Front_end_names.jpg
discos will run you about 50-70 bucks, depending on what you buy. if you want a cheap way of doing it until you lift the jeep, remove the nuts like we did, drill the bottom stud for a cotter pin and use that to hold the bottom of the link to the spring perch. do the same with the top and all you'll have to do is pop the pins out and the link should come right off. should cost less than 10 bucks.
to help get the links back on, i found it easiest to put the passenger side on first and then, use a pry bar like this pic shows:
http://www.geocities.com/silentsentinal/Pry_point.jpg
just put the bar in where the bottom arrow shows and use it to push the bar down low enough to slip the link back on the perch. i did forget to warn you that you want the jeep sitting as level side to side as you can get it though. sorry about that. don't feel too bad though. Justin had a hell of a time getting his disco pins back in after the feb run so even with the disconnects it can be a pain.
here's a link to the cheaper version i was talking about:

The problem was that the paint and dirt and stuff got in. The week after that trip it took me 2 hours to get them back out. So I took all the pain off and grided some of the metal away. I then greased everything up. Lots and lots of grease. They came out easy and took me a few minutes to put in with a hammer :). All better now. I am going to make my own disconnects for track bars and sway bars... thats when I get my welder :)

a properly designed and installed track bar should not limit flex. It will however even out your steering. i need to put one in my zuk right now. when i steer the weight of the truck and the tires tend to push the axle to the side a bit before actually turning the wheels. it makes the steering feel almost spongy. i fought that all day on saturday. thats why i had no turning radius
thats one of the things i need to sit down and figure out and build one.
