View Full Version : DMV with a lift....? Tilt test?

Ok so I might end up putting a 4.5" lift on. I know 4" above stock requires a tilt test. I want my lift on before summer but have inspection in fall.
If I put my 30" tires back on that I have now I might get away with the fender problem and possibly make the jeep look less lifted, possibly enough not to get a tilt test. I don't know.
What are other people experiences in Jersey with lifts of this height and trying to get inspection?
How harsh is a tilt test? Anything to watch out for?
Get your inspection done in fall when you are supposed to so you dont have to deal with fines. Then when you get your lift on go get the tilt test taken with the tires you will be driving with. Some cops can be jerks and give you a ticket for not having flares. Happens to people all the time. Start looking for extended flares or TJ flares if they will cover the tire. Just play it safe with this stuff we dont want to get on the bad side of the cops.
The tilt test is not that bad I dont think. They put you on this machine and it giggles the hell out of the suspention and stuff. Back before the machine the inspectors used to just hand on the side of the truck and see if its stable enough.

yah..
well if its not over 4" it doesn't require a tilt test. But I may have 4.5 or close to 5. So I don't know if they will notice. It's just that I won't have an extra $300 for flares right now.
But more than that is I just don't want my Jeep to tip over on this tilt test, cause I am responsible for it. Although I don't know why it would more than the next guy.
What would cause a Jeep to more tipsy??
If you are 4 inches taller then stock height at the bumper you will need the tilt test. If you get a lift after inspection and you dont get the tilt test done and you get pulled over. You can be fined for having an unsafe lifted vechile. Either get flares or jut get 10.5" wide tires and you should be set. Hope this helps... its hard to get around these thigns... :)

The new height of the Jeep. The center of gravity changes a lot and at turns and sudden changes can cause the Jeep to tip. But with the right width tires and lift and other steering parts you shoudl be fine. In lifted YJs the suspention is very stiff at first. You should have no issues with body roll even when disconnected. I drove around disconencted for a week and it was not bad at all. You only notice at sharp or fast turns. The body rolls alittle more then usuall. Hope this helps...

He had a 6" lift...No tilt test...they tested him like every one else except they made the shaker a little more violent. They gave him a sticker at the end so i asume every thing was ok w/o the tilt. I really would not worrie about it...as you sid u dont thave the money to do anything about it...and it needs to be inspected , so go for it.

P.S. leave it in 4x4..that really throws um for a loop when they put only 2 wheels on the rollers lol...no jk

I think there is a place in Morristown... Call DMV and ask for that place. I am not getting it done because I only have 2.5" lift and I passed inspection with it :D

Yah I guess I will just see if it passes and if they don't notice.
I just have to take my lightbar off and make sure I rise that third brake light when I get my full size spare.

Here are the 3 DMV stations that do the tilt test which you would have to schedule after you fail the regular inspection.
Asbury Park Specialty Site
1010 Comstock Street
Asbury Park, NJ 07712
(732) 869-8328
Morristown Specialty Site
101 Ridgedale Avenue
Morristown, NJ 07960
(973) 631-6578
Winslow Specialty Site
250 Spring Garden Road
Ancora, NJ 08037
(609) 567-0646
Another thing to consider is that lift height is determined by Body lift suspension lift and tire size. for example my TJ has a 1" body 2" sus and 33" tires which makes for a total of 6" over my stock configuration( I had teh little 215 about 27" tires). I have to go through inspection myself this summer but Iam not really all that worriedbut iti depends on how much of a stickler you have looking at your truck or jeep.

I have KC lights on my windshield of my jeep, is this Illegal? would I fail inspection for that? My other question. Does it matter where you go to get your lifted jeep inspected?
Thanks in advance.
John.

Lights on windsheild I didnt pass. You cant have more then one pair of AUX lights. I had a pair on the bumper and windsheild. I failed for that and emissions. They guy just told me take them off and come back. So I dont think its illegal but those little pads of paper that stick to the windsheild are aparently a distration... my dad got a ticket for that. I was like umm wtf.
If over 4" from stock height your need to get your Jeep tilt tested then inspected where ever is closer. There are only a few tilt test places and those are listed a few posts up. Hope this helps out!

xeon,
Thank for that info. I also have lights on the front bumper, I guess I'll worry about that when the time comes.
thanks.
Yup not a problem. Yea put your windsheild lights on after inspection :). Just make sure they are covered when they are above your regular headlights. That will keep you out of a ticket.

Someone brought to my attention that a track bar may be required on the front and rear or just front axle for inspection. Is this true for NJ???
ROCKREADYXJ
04-15-2005, 06:35 PM
That is not true at all. if your vehicle came with one you may be required to have one.

Yea I am going to delete your post. See us Jeepers are not the only people viewing this website. If you want to talk about that stuff you should PM the people you want to tell. But please dont get him or yourself in trouble by posting stuff like that publicly.

Does anyone else have any info or anyone accually go through a tilt test in NJ or anywhere really?
I heard that its a series of ramps that are tilted on an angle at the side and you have to go through a small course.
Any input?
They now have a machine. They put your truck on it and it shacks the crap out of the car and tells you a score. Just do it its free... :D

That machine just tests ball joints, the tilt test involves driving two driver side wheels up a concrete ramp while the other two wheels rest on a scale so they can take a weight measurement.

I recently went to state inspection in Randolph ... they laughed me all the way to Morristown ... You have to go to the specialty inspection station on Ridgedale ave. ( appointment only ) Do yourself a favor don't show up there around lunch ... don't interupt lunch time ... unless you want to die. They will give you a paper with all the requirements in regards to lifting a vehicle. Right now I am pretty much screwed unless I want to take my entire truck apart. As far as the tip part, it's just a concrete ramp and a scale to measure the weight on the ground side tires. One other thing ... don't even think about trying to get tested on stock rims and tires with a 4" + lift ... they won't even look at it.

My question! if they refuse to inspect you why are they there fore? Why are they on the list for inspecting Lifted Vehicles?
My other question! what was on that paper that they gave you?

Might have come out wrong ... let me explain ... They wouldn't inspect my truck in Randolph .. said I had to make an appointment at a specialty station ... the one on Ridgedale ave in Mo town was the closest ... happen to get there around lunch time ... door was locked so I rang the bell a few times ... bad idea ... they don't like to be bothered during lunch ... a very large unhappy guy came to the door and handed me a sheet with the requirements on lifting a vehicle ... said I better make sure I meet the requirements when I make my appointment ... I will post it real soon .. mostly common things ... all factory suspension needs to be represented and functioning .. ( sway bars, track bars ) drag link angle ... bumper height ... u bolts need to extend 1" past nuts ... one set of additional lighting ... if other that factory location they need to be covered on the street ... you can even put a dozen lights on the roof if you like, as long as none of them work :D .... That was the last time I went to visit them ... I have too many things like the TPI 350 and a large spring over lift ... never going to pass ... I'm currently looking for an alternative approach

Why won't they look at it with stock tire size?
Do you need to have rear track bar on too?
What other requirements do you have to meet?
I am getting the R.E. 4.5" lift with 33" tires.
I don't want to tip or fail

It's not that they won't look at it ... they are pretty slick ... they can tell when someone has a big lift and other gear bolted to their rig that they don't exactly roll around on skinny highway tires. I'm sure they have seen it all and heard every excuse in the book.
As I stated before you need to have all stock suspension equipment represented ( if it was there from the factory it needs to be there in some way shape or form ) Front and rear track bars and sway bar ... you can replace the factory parts with locking track bars and disconnects ... but it all must be on the truck. Ball joints and tie rod ends must be tight and there is a certain limit ( which is on the sheet  ) as to the maximum angle you can have for your drag link to keep your steering within safe geometry.
For the life of me I can't find the sheet I spoke of earlier but I do remember the tire's also need to be covered 100% across the tread width ... How about I search like hell ... find the sheet ... and post ALL the rules :D

Sure... thanks.
Cause with the R.E. lift I'm getting they have a front track bar relocation bracket. But the rear is just going to be gone. I am putting in an 8.8 axle. I guess I should get the bracket welded to the 8.8 to hook it up at a later time?

hmm, i wonder if they consider an anti-wrap bar addaquate for the replacement of the rear track bar. glad NY isn't that strick yet

I don't think so but I could be wrong ... Track bar keeps the diff located left to right ... I know my anti-wrap only keeps the diff from doing summersaults under the truck ... really doesn't locate anything left to right .
Want to go get my truck inspected in NY for me :D This state doesn't like people to have fun ...
