I am looking to get my Dana 30 gears changed.
Anyone know of a good place in North Jersey I can get this done?
For a good price too, less than $300 for labor.
thanks
Do it yourself? :)
There are a few people on the board that did there own gearing and they can tell you how to do it or even help out. Labor will be more then $300 I hear like $700 for front and back. I mean its semi lengthy and you figure the average mech hourly charge is like $70 so...

Well I suppose I could do it if I had good instructions or help.
I am just going to do the Dana 30 cause I plan on getting an 8.8 so it's already geared at what I want.

Look up ROCKREADYXJ on this board. He has a shop in Orange County, NY. I am going to call him to get my gears done too. I don't have prices but from what I understand, average price is $250/axle, for labor. Regearing is not something just anyone should try. You could take a risk and try it yourself if you want but there are too many tolerences that need to be perfect. I say leave it for the pros.

Yah I would rather someone else do it so I know it's done right, but I woudn't mind at least knowing how it's done.
If anyone sees ROCKREADYXJ let him know about this thread.

If you can find someone to do it for around $300 an axle do it!
Last I checked shops around here are getting double and triple that price.
I do my own but I used to do it professionally when I had my own shop years ago.
I am surprised at the labor some shops are charging. A properly set up shop should be able to do both front and rear axles in one day, even if its a 10 hour day thats around $650 to $750 for both axles + Parts,Gear oil and gaskets.
If you have some mechanical ability, can read a dial indicator/vernier caliper and plan on playing with hotrods and 4wd vehicles for a while you should learn to do it yourself. You will save hundreds of dollars in the years to come.
Between the instructions that come with the gears and a search on the internet for write-ups about installing gears i bet most of you could do it yourself. If someone was interested i could do a quick post on the tools you would need, some tips and links to good write-ups on the subject.

I called 1800-923-Jeep in New Egypt, NJ and asked them about re-gearing the Dana 30 in a 95 YJ that currently has 3.07 to 4.10.
The guy there said that I need a new carrier in the Dana 30 in order to put 4.10's in because after 3.54 gears you need a bigger carrier.
Is this true? and if so where might I find one new.

Yes this is true. You will need a new carrier if you are going from 3.07 to 4.10. I got mine from Pefrormance Offroad center in GA. Look at quadratec too. I think they have drive line parts in the back of the catalog. It should be about $50 for the carrrier.

Hey kaffeene, Just out of curiosity what size tires are you running or planning on running?

Hey I just found a carrier/4.10 combo with the gears already in for $200 at Quadratec.
What would it take to bolt the carrier in or how much should I expect to pay to have it done?
Hey kaffeene, Just out of curiosity what size tires are you running or planning on running?
I plan on running 33" tires... I know 4.56 would be ideal especially better if I get more lift and bigger tires in the future but the 8.8 I am getting has 4.10's and I don't want to regear 2 axles and I will get better gas mileage.

If I can't find a dana 30 with 4.10's and I end up buying the superior gears and install kit. Where can I find a carrier that will fit 4.10's and possibly a Detroit EZ locker? Quadratec wants $80 which I don't want to pay.
Also anyone know how the Detroit EZ locker is? Its about $260 so I might be able to afford to put it in the dana 30.

Kaffeene,
Call Performance Offroad Center (PORC) in GA, (706) 548-9393. I got my carriers from him. It should be about $50. Ask for Alex. He is a lot of help. I don't know about the Detroit. Ask about that as well.
