Guy at work wants to dump his 89 yj, ~150k he says its 6cyl 5 speed...
My guess is peugot gearbox and crappy carter carb on that motor... It needs a new clutch and a new rear main seal, i told him $800 if i like what i see and he agreed cause he wants to get rid of it, is it worth it?
If it works out im thinking SOA conversion  or clean it up and dump it for some extra change.
Any ideas as to what its worth?

I mean if you have the space and the time to do a SOA then do it. Use it as your trail rig or something. But if it was me I would probally clean it up get it running nice and sell it. You can probally get atleast $2000 for it if it works and looks nice. But thats because I am still in school and dont have much money :)

Hope this helps. But if it was a newer Jeep with a 6 I would take it and plop it in my YJ so I can get some more grunt. :P

If its a 6 cyl and a 5 speed then its a AX-15 tranny. The peunpoop is the automatic tranny in those YJ's. I think I am right... :) Acually it could be either or... acording to jeepforums faq it could be both... you would ahve to check it out. but if it is the ax-15 then its worth much more because people can use that tranny for engine swaps from a 4 banger. :D

could be the Ax-15 or the peugot. they switched over in early 89. the auto is the TF999 X

800 for a jeep that runs is pretty good deal anyway you cut it. the 4.2 is a reliable engine once you take care of the carb and has all the low end torque you could ever want off road. setup for a trail machine it would make a great project. the clutch is about $180 in parts and about a day or 2 in labor. annoying and a pain but doable in the driveway. the rear main will come out through the oil pan in two pieces just like a 4.0. if the body is decent and the frame is strong (check out this link for what to look for in one of the more common areas that rust:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141890) then i would say get it. if nothing else, you can part it out and likely double your money.

Hey there, Got an 89 YJ myself with the 258 ....

Good points to look at on it. ...
while running if you hear no pinging or knocking ... engine is still good!
If making a little knocking no big deal you will get some time out of it....

as for the Tranny ... HA! its a Peugot most definitely ... I got the 5 speed and I have just replace my peugot tranny myself ... i had a 140K on it ... syncranizers where all screwed up ...

Easiest way to tell its a peugot look at it .... if it looks like a waffle and all the metal connects at the bottom of the tranny in the middle (looks like 2 pieces) then its a peugot ....

Usually can have it rebuilt and do the clutch and bell housing for about 1000 if your really sweating it ....

my advice ...

drive it, wheel it .... if it aint broke don't fix it ... when it does ... you can figure something out ....

just my 2 cents ....

For $800 get it and build it to wheel! The 258/peugot arent the greatest parts but a 4.0/AX 15 will bolt in place
