Getting some new tires soon (31" BFG AT's) and so I'm looking to upgrade the wheels at the same time to a 15x8. Anyone have any recommendations for a steel wheel in the $50 range. I dont need anything to crazy, just something that looks decent and will hold up to mild off roading.

The cragar 8's or american racing ar 757 I think they are.

Those are what basically everyone gets

Hope this helps!

I think I might end up going with the black steelies afterall. Now for my next question, any ideas on what backspacing I should go with? I'm planning on getting 31x10.5r15's and putting them on a 15x8 rim. I'd like the tires to stick out a little bit, but not too much. Would a 4" backspacing achieve this on a 98 TJ? I wont have any clearance issues with my stock suspension, assuming I dont disconnect, right?

You will have rubbing when wheeling. But for just driving on road you will be good. Stock backspacing on the YJ is 3.75 thats all I know. I think 4 will work for you they will stick out alittle. Make sure they dont stick out too much. NJ has laws about tires sticking out. You can get a ticket for having your tires stick out. Thats why they people have fender flares to clear the tiers. Hope this helps!

Yeah, I know, thats what I'm trying to avoid, which is why I'm a bit unsure of what backspacing to get. I believe stock on a TJ is 5.5", so I'm not sure about the 4" - it might stick out too far.

Check this out http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46712
It is pictures of wranglers with about everykind of lift/wheels/tires.
That should give you an idea what it will look like with different setups.
I would think that 4" backspacing would be right though.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this one but if you wheel even once a month get the mt's instead of at's. The bfg mud terrains are only slighly louder than all terrains on the street and last nearly as long but are way better off road. Either way the bfg's last a long time and are decent offroad tires for the price.

Check summit racing. I got white steel wheels for about $25 each shipped. That was 3 years ago, but I bet they haven't gone up in price much since then. :D I think I had a $5 off coupon as well.....
