View Full Version : Got me into college!

Well, after plenty of applications, essays, stress, time and stress, I finally was able to get myself into the college of my choice: Stevens Institute of Technology, in nearby Hoboken, NJ. I was admitted under their Early Decision program, so I'm pretty much going. I plan on studying engineering, most likely mechanical, but I'm not sure yet. Anyway, I'm pretty excited, so I just thought I'd share.

BTW, any other college kids or soon-to-be ones out there? Where does (did) everyone go?

i got my 2yr assoc. degree at Penn College of Tech in Williamsport,PA for Computer Aided Drafting. I am in the process of going back for a 4yr bachelors in computer aided product design. un fortunately i have found the 4 yr degree is pretty much worthless...too bad i only need 8 classes to finish it. if i would have known better i would have went right to PSU for a BSME degree. I may persue that after im done with this degree though.

Yeah, I'm starting to look forward to it more and more. One interesting thing I learned the other day when I was on campus is that opposed to earning a BS in Eng from them, they are one of the few colleges to issue an actual BE. Whether this will help me in the job market, I do not know, but according to the information I've gotten from Stevens, it's more design intensive, which is what I want. I've always liked industrial design and it seems like Stevens will help me combine the two.

the only thing i can suggest is becareful with some of those specialized degree's. thats what i ran into. the 4 yr degree i will have is basically a glorified draftsman degree. its not techinical enough for an engineering field...but yet its way overkill for a drafting job.

the best i can expect with this degree is maybe a bit more money as a draftsman thats it, which is a drop in the bucket compaired to what i would be making had i went right to PSU for a BSME.

my company i know right now are starting project engineer's out at over $55k/yr.

makes ya sick to know that they are paying someone that much for a job your very capable of doing...and could have had if you know what to go for in the past...

ARGH!

Yeah, I did my research on the subject and I'm not worried about running into any problems about it. I'm still learning all of the stuff a BS ME would learn, but now they introduce more design elements into it. More importantly, however, I'm given the chance to get an internship/co-op after my freshman year; I think real world experience will go further than any degree...

Best of luck with the CAD though. I cant wait to get some more of that under my belt (I've dabbled with it a bit on my computer). It seems like really interesting stuff and I hope to be able to apply it to the automotive industry. (Formula SAE...)

thats cool...as long as it has engineering in the degree title thats what most companies look for.

wow lots of people using cad
draftsmen too way cool

currently at bergen for the rest of this year
transfering to njit to study architecture
but i currently draft by hand at my work which really stinks but man does it sure give you a whole lot of appreciation for what they did back in the day.

what programs are you guys using.
autodesk/autocad

I play around with Solidworks and Autocad, trying to pick up what I can. I also play with Rhino for 3D modeling and Flamingo for rendering. Oh yeah, and I use Photoshop and Illustrator for pretty much everything else.

ive done a bit of board drafting. i kinda liked it actually... the cad stuff is driving me nuts as of late...im not cut out to be a 100% desk jockey.

My company is on contract with Autodesk for updates. we run latest and greatest Inventor 10 series. Primarily we use mechanical desktop and autocad mechanical. hopefully we will start using inventor in the near future. i like the way the software works.
