View Full Version : Cage tie ins?
I want cage tie ins for only one reason, so I can take the cage and tub off the frame. But cage tie ins seem like a pretty big weak point in a cage.
I plan on rolling my cage more then once. I want it to be a full on comp cage.
Let me know what you guys think.

Bolt sandwich plates together above and below the floor. Weld your cage to the top plates and weld the bottom plates to the frame. It does not get any easier than this. It is extremely ridgid and quiet and the ability to disassemble and reassemble everything easily is retained.
These are my tie-ins and you know my junk has been dirty side up more than a few times.

I would also put a smaller diameter pipe into the frame section and have it poke through the pipe into the other pipe. Sorta to help prevent the shearing of the bolts.
Saw it on xtreme4x4. Heh

The way Chris's cage is setup you have a very slim chance of shearing a bolt. Reason being is because it would be lateral forces to shear a bolt like that and since theres 4 bolts at every plate, you would need a pretty big force to do that. And if that force was present your body wouldn't be looking too pretty.

I forget what the lateral shear spec is on a 3/8" grade 8 bolt but multiply it by 24 and you will (have surpased my mathematical abilities lol) understand that I will rip the tube before seperating the plates from each other. I don't even have body mounts, the cage mounts ridgid to the frame and the floor is just between the two plates.

How do they seem like a weak point Is it because you are thinking the bolts are a weak point? Little confused by that statement.

Well rolling a vehicle more than once is going to break allot more stuff than the cage. A good roll can wipe out the sheet metal to a point where you can use it any more. And you used the term "full on comp cage" elaborate on what you mean by that.
I personally like the way chriss tied his into the frame in the rear its Ideal out of the way and very strong. the sides are nice two.
