so i havent been on here in a loonnnggg time. My jeep has been broken since october...buuuttt, i got some stuff done recently.

so i picked up my jeep today from jersey jeep 'n customs. ive only been home for about an hour, and im already posting this cause im REAL excited.

what broke:
Stripped gears in d35
blew d30 u joints to peices
bent front DS
carb is begging to be rebuilt

what has been done since it broke back in october:
Optima Battery
New Starter
New front ds
changed axle shafts and then snapped one an hour later

Jersey Jeep N Customs work:
D44 swap with 4:56 gears w/ MORE Spring perches and shock mounts
complete D30 rebuild with alloy usa chromoly TJ shafts, block off plate for vacuum motor, gear rebuild kit, 4:56 gears, all new seals, etc etc.
Rear SS Brake line (never even realized that wasnt done when i bought it :hmph: )
Swapped a TJ Rear shaft in cause it was a little bit shorter

Whats left:
Holley Rebuild, got the kit waiting in my room...
TJ Rugged Ridge Flares/Side Marker Lights
Fix passenger front blinker
Fix headlight problem
PASS INSPECTION!

here are some pics of the old broken stuff, followed by the new stuff, and JJNC Work...which im real happy with so far.

yea, tons of work and $$$ going into this thing latley....and by latley, i mean since i bought it.

had a starting issue yesterday, wouldnt turn over, hooked up a battery charger for a few today and it started right up. have it charging now. brand new optima failing me already? someone said they dont always come fully charged off the shelf...hmm..well see

hmm, this forum seems to have died out since i last visted regularly...

anyway...

rebuilt the carb first thing this am. starts right up, but idles SO high. and the throttle sticks a bit. my friend is gunna help me out with that later when he gets home. i think this rebuild may have really solved my problem. im so amped.

looks good, got a lot of work done but just two things that i spotted.

1. your front axle pinion angle seems to be wayyyyy off in that picture. If you could get a better side picture I could tell you if its off or not.

2. your rear driveshafts looks to be kinda on the short side, you planning on doing a sye and cv ds or anything.

But besides that looks real good, keep up the good work.

Matt

FarrellX

plan to do a SYE and CV as soon as i can afford it. thats next on the major mod list.

as for the pinion angle, it was never adjusted from stock, jeep has 1 1/4" shackles. so im sure its a little off, but from me looking at it, doesnt seem to be to bad.

ok...so....

its official....

I'M BACK!

solved the throttle sticking and high idling problems by adding some nuts as spacers between the electric choke assembly and the carb itself. everything was sticking, but not anymore. im gunna re-insure it tomorrow. and start with the headlights and everything else that needs to be done soon as its not raining. drove it around the block, bumped twice at first, i think cause everything is just brand new, but then was its usual rough riding self the rest of the way. didnt go over 25, so im a little nervous about getting it to higher speeds only cause of my past experiences....but...I'M BACK

mooorreee updates:

drove fine to and from my friends house last night. drove to the bank fine this morning. stalled while waiting at the drive through. kept stalling, had to give it gas, let off, shift, and gas right away to get out of there w/o stalling. made it to my friends house without letting off the gas to much. stalled. kept stalling. tried adjusting it on our "lunch break" that we took at his house during work and no dice. friend came to help me late tonight and got it running nice. stalled around the corner once, but then continued to run fine after that. hhmmmm

also, somewhat found the headlight problem. the wires going into the back of them are a little messed up. we managed to get them both on, and slightly taped up to hold. i gotta get a new plug or something.

so i just made a huuugggeee post, and xed out by accident. pissed..but anyway, im bored, so ill re-type.

since ive been frequenting the boards, i figured id post an update.

headlight problem fixed. new pigtails/plugs and switch.

front blinker problem fixed. bulb.

brake light problem fixed. fuse.

black tj sahara flares installed. lights work with parking lights, but not as blinkers. any ideas?

moved forward facing hella's on light bar to bumper. stock ones didnt work and one was busted out cause my buddy backed up into it.

flooded trans twice since rebuild. got it flushed IMMEDIATLEY. staying outta the deep stuff till i get a vent tube hooked up, which is gunna be FOREVER. if you dont know, look it up for auto tranny's...its a major project.

slow leak out of pass. side of d30...damnit.

burns oil like a mother. about a gallon every week and a half. especially if i drive more then to and from work everyday.

almost ready for inspection...

also, picked up some new rubber. going on in spring as narrower is better in snow. they are 35x15 TSL's on CJ rims. anyone want to trade cj rims for 5x4.5 rims? looking for a 15x10 with 3.5-3.75 BS.

i missed a lot since i xed it all, last post was huge, but eehhh...here are some pics.

started the install, the antenna mount is made for a hardtop, but its in the way of the window..hmm. i think i may just cut off whats in the way, as much as i dont want to cut into a new mount like that. other then the ghetto rig with the tail light so i can drive, and getting the cable into the tub of the jeep...thats all i got done with the cb.

10-26-2007, 11:09 PM
yea ive been working on it a lot and spending a lot of cash...between jeep and tattoos and taking gf to dinner i hardly have money for my bills...which isnt THAT much, haha.

decided come spring im getting t&t tube fenders front and rear with either 4.5" or 6" flare. this way i can clear the 35"s no problem, and keep a nice low COG
http://www.tntcustoms.com/webv4/YJTubeFenderSamples/YJYLink_B.JPG

ill probably do them black, rather then green.

got the antenna mount up and antenna cable ran into the tub. the mount, made for YJ's with hardtops, is in the way of my hardtop. so im just gunna cut the peice thats in the way off. and i gotta get longer bolts for my taillight so i can use the mount, tail light gaurd, and tailight all together...they dont screw in enough with all on there. hopefully i can finish this whole cb thing tomorrow/sunday. unfortunatley, dont think ill be making the wharton cleanup on sunday, which is what i mainly bought the cb for.

smoothed out and painted the antenna mount. went tail light, mount, taillight gaurd. fit the best that way, and i needed to get longer bolts since they werent long enough to go through all 3

annndd why not do the cb install also?
mounted on pass. side of center console, not where i originally planned though, speaker/LED display all faces me of course

where the wires come out, wiring is not the cleanest, but it gets the job done
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/stolenxideas/DSC01386.jpg

and where the antenna cable comes into the tub, i siliconed the hole so the sharp edge didnt cut the cable and so its all sealed up

where to mount the mic holder...hmmmm....

FarrellX

already tested it. wasnt doing highway speeds, but around my neighborhood i can. the speaker is facing me (which is on the bottom of the cb) so it seems a little louder then usual. when im using it, ill have it open of course.

spoke to the shop. plugging the current vent hole, and putting a fitting and hose elsewhere so hopefully i wont flood it again. also extended my d44 breather while their at it to under the hood. trans guy is ALSO re doing the clutches and filter to prevent any future problems down the line. they said they dont want me to have to go through this again, and dont want to do it again, so their gunna do their best to help me out...hahaha.:bdance:

FarrellX

on the way home form the shop the tube was spitting fluid everywhere. so just shoved the vent hose into the dipstick tube so the fluid goes back into the trans. going back saturday to fix it all up. they are rigging a dipstick tube with a fitting to put the hose on so the fluid goes back iunto the trans and another fitting to hook a hose up to for the air to vent. should work alright..any opinions? they put the fitting on the trans on the top corner of the tail housing, any research i did, they put it on top by the bellhousing, wonder if thats why it spits fluid out. (the shop gave the trans to a trans guy, they dont do it there themselves, also put in new clutches, planetary gears, pump and filter. said it was caked with mud whoops)

changed my wheel cylinders tonight. one had a leak, but changed both anyway, for obvious reasons. its nice to not have my brake go to the floor. havent test driven it yet, but im actually excited to go to work tomorrow morning and have brakes :bdance: hopefully

doing a tune up in the next few days also, and siliconing everything. also making a snorkel, soon as i find a way to turn my air filter into an air box, so i can hook a tube up to it. finally getting my jeep to wharton made me realize i really need to do this. especially at water road.

XEON

Your trans fluid is coming out of the dipstick? So they are adapting it to flow back into the trans somehow? This does not sound like a FIX at all... If your fluid is comign out of the vent or dipstick you have some more serious issues then it just leaking...

I am not an auto transmission guru. But that to me sounds like its overfilled or not cooled properly. Might want to have it looked at more seriously.

Did you catch any stripers at Island Beach? I really wanted to get down there this fall to fish but too much other stuff came up. I caught a ton of stripers up here and on the Sea Fox this spring though.

FarrellX
12-06-2007, 10:01 PM
nothing but shorts chris  of course they cought tons of stripers and blues the week before and the week after we went:evil:

and the fluid is coming outa the vent tube. they put it on the back of the trans, if you look here http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?referrerid=57133&t=586054 youll see he put it towards the bellhousing as high up as possible. also, someone mentions putting it in the location mine is, and having the same problem. i wish i saw this to show them before hand, but what are you gunna do? the trans guy explained it as, due to the t-case drop leaning it back a bit, it wants to fill up more then it should (so keep the level a little below the full line on the dipstick). this helped a little as it wasnt pouring out, but still coming out a bit. it wasnt ALL fluid pouring out, it was kinda bubbling out with air...liek the air was just forcing it out. cant really explain it. will have more info/pics come saturday when it gets all finished up. i trust them 100% with my jeep. and i KNOW they dont want me there AGAIN with trans problems...they even said it, and said their gunna make sure its done right.

sorry, im babbling about a topic i dont know a ton about, haha. anyway, decided after the "water proofing" is done. im getting tint. its something ive wanted on my jeep since i got it. doing the hardtop DARK and the doors pretty light. got even moer bored and did this...

got home power washed it cause it was 50 degrees out. vacuumed the wharton sand out of the inside. fixed my 4 speakers in my two "mini subs" and hooked up the 4 tweeters in there that were never hooked up. one speaker is blown out and is staticy, so im gunna disonnect it and then ill be alls et with 3 speakers instead of 4. oh well.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/stolenxideas/DSC01736.jpg
thats how the trans vent was rigged up to solve the leaking out of the tube. it wasnt a constant flow, he explained it as some fluid getting thrown into the tube, and then when air wants to push out, it was pushing some fluid out. this is doing its job so far.

did a full tune up and some water proofing...ugly, but it gets the job done
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/stolenxideas/DSC01743.jpg

i did the tune up cause its running real rough. was stalling out randomly, eventually started stalling immediatley soon as it started. tune up didnt help. so i turned the idle up to keep it running. need carb adjustments? timing issues? any ideas? it happened out of NO WHERE, so i dont know whast going on.

also, can anyone tell me what this is. its on the driver side of the trans, just noticed it..

now what i think i need to make it work for me is...
Advance Adapters Crank Position Sensor Kit (http://eshop.advanceadapters.com/commerce/ccp1492-28p-n-71601229-jeep-4-0l-crank-position-sensor-kit-716012-716012.htm)

An external/inline fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and fuel filter
E2000 i was told is an inline fuel pump that will work with the 4.0. came on many vehicles, or i can get one new. will any regulator and filter work?

an adapter to mate my TF999 Trans to the 4.0. it was previously a manual trans...so i imagine mine wont bolt up. one question i have is, i have an adapter on my 4.2, PO swapped the manual for an automatic. is there any way this will work for me? or deffinatley not?

and then of course misc. items like possible fuel hoses, coolant hoses, etc etc.

sound good?

The e2000 fuel pump is just a presure pump. They have a hard time priming themselfs. I have rear people using compressed air into the gas tank to get them primed. I would look into a fuel tank that came with a YJ with the later model 4.0.

FarrellX
01-07-2008, 10:03 AM
yea, im leaning away from the e2000. waiting to hear back from someone in the for sale section here about his tank set up. may also just buy a whole bunch of hesco stuff when i have money saved. gas pupm/regulator, CPS kit, etc etc.

Chris 88 YJ
01-07-2008, 01:28 PM
There is no need to swap out the gas tank. The E2000 pump will work fine if you mount it close enough to the tank. I've done it before, the inside of the driver's frame rail between the shock mount and the e-brake cable bracket is a good spot. You can even use the 4.2 fuel lines on the frame, Russel makes a clip on -6AN adapter for the rail and you can adapt the factory 3/8 hardline to -6 with a compression fitting.

I like braided stainless hose but if you dont want to spend that much, -6 push-lock fittings and Parker blue hose will also work very well. The entire fuel system on my Dodge diesel is plumbed that way.

Avoid the Autozone "fuel injection hose". It's cheap garbage and dryrotted through on my last rig causing a small underhood fire that could have very easily been catastrophic.

If memory serves me correctly, the fuel rail on your 99 motor does not have a return line. You need to swap out the fuel rail for an older one with a return. It is a direct swap, takes 10 minutes.

Good luck! :bdance:

FarrellX
01-07-2008, 07:03 PM
ive heard about that fuel rail swap...ill look into my options a little more. there are sooo many different ways to go with this, and everyday, someone says sometyhing to change my mind...maybe mounting the 4.0 in there tonight..will keep you all posted as i have been.

FarrellX

got the fuel pump
got the cps kit
ordered parts from hesco: throttle cable, automatic trans kit, speed sensor and connector
got a YJ 4.0 airbox and intake tube off ebay

swapped fuel rails
started plugging in some of the harness
started pulling the harmonic balancer and the puller started bending and it was budging :help:

you mean a balancer puller? im not sure how far you are, and a friend who lives in my neighborhood has a heavier duty one he says, so well see how that goes, wouldnt want you to come all the way here for something that should take 5 minutes. thanks for the offer though, i really appreciate it

and i said it was budging, i meant to say wasnt. i heard potential for snow this weekend? if not..i may be working on it more this weekend. should get my airbox and intake tube tomorrow, and the hesco stuff im hoping comes by the end of the week.

got a lock right locker for the d30 for 190 shipped, brand new in box. psyched on that. will be putting that in when i change the passenger side seal soon as this engine swap is done. also gunna get a diff cover too, and do it all at once.

AA CPS kit is on.
Hesco Throttle Cable is on.
Hesco Auto Trans Kit is on.
Hesco Speed Sensor is on.

Showed the sensor to my friend who has been helping me with this and it completley blew his mind that it had a spot for the elec. plug and the cable. the hesco stuff all went on within 20 minutes for everything, that included taking the old stuff off. And those 20 minutes were some good progress.

All thats left is finish up the wiring, most of it, and put the fuel pump in and hook up the airbox (YJ tube on newer 4.0 isnt long enoguh to reach the airbox). psyched

then it's hardly driveable till i fix the seal in the d30, and when i do that ill be putting on a ruff stuff cover, the lock right, lube locker gasket, and alloy usa tube seals.

Never heard much about the firepower, but what I have heard about those upgrades is you have to do it all, not just one part to really have a big difference.

ok, so i havent posted in a while. engine has been excellent...:bdance:

i just got done lifting it higher too. skyjacker nitro shocks and bds 5" springs. on top of my 1 1/4 shackles i already had.

oh yea, i made the snorkel too since last post. the air filter up there is only temporary till i can figure out a way to enclose an air filter under the hood. and yes, it works, and yes i DO need it.
