Got my eyes on a set of full width 44s from a 79 Cherokee. Guy says they are the offset axles. Has the passenger drop up front, which is good for my 78CJ5. Anyone know which side the rear offset is on? My AMC20 has the drivers side pumpkin.

on those old cherokee axles the were offset front and rear to the passenger side.

You said your CJ-5 has an offset to the driver side? They should have the offset to the passenger side.

It actually appears to be in the center at a glance, but I measures from the centering pin to the edge of the housing, and it is a little over an inch shorter on the drivers side. Im 99% sure I'm running the Dana 20 xfer case with it, which is supposed to have the rear shaft centered.

yes that is true but the pinion is the part that is centered not the housing what you have is correct and the rear waggy axle will not work.
