I am in Bristol CT. Anyone know any good places to go in CT? I know i use to go to Mt. Lamentation (i think that is how to spell it) a while ago, and then it was blocked off, but now open again. Not sure how legal it is...

Anyone know of anywhere???

I've heard on the 'muddy grape vine' of a place called Pain Hill somewhere in CT, don't know where it is or even if you spell it like that! UConn. has a 4x4 club thats where I heard about Pain Hill, try them. I live on LI, and go to a couple of leagal-ish places out here, if you are interested. I'm sure if we put our heads together we could find out about Pain Hill also. I used to work in New Canaan, and all I know is that Pain Hill is 2hrs north from there.

Not really my cup of tea either, not until I fork out $600 on rock rails anyway! If not Pain Hill, then let's maybe sort something else out, just not too mental......I can't be trashing my 'go-to-work-motor', but I'll give it some stick, as long as I can fit on the trail, and not get hung up as I did a couple of Saturdays ago with NYWheeler & Xeon! Long wheelbase.......gets you everytime. I miss my D90!!

Hey guys, I just saw this post... haven't been here in a while. I'm from CT, been wheeling in CT for well over 20 years and started one of CT's original clubs, the Eastern 4 Wheelers. There is currently only 1 legal public place to wheel in CT. That is Pain Hill rd, which is a state forest road. However, it is a seasonal road, closed from Jan 1 til late March, early April. This is due to the fact that the roads in that state forest are snowmobile trails during the winter months. Despite the fact that there is no snow, its still closed. Driving the roads while they are very muddy puts heavy ruts in place that will screw things up for the snowmobilers when it finally does snow.

Up here in CT, your best bet is to join up with a local club. Our clubs have access to about 5000 acres of private land from upstate NY to NH, VT, MA and CT. Most clubs charge dues that are only around $50 a year. By being a member of any of the EC4WDA's regional clubs, you gain access to all the other clubs' trailrides, which means that you can pretty much be out wheeling, somewhere in southern New England, every weekend. Plus all the other bennies, $50 is actually quite cheap.. considering that if you joined a quad club, the dues usually run upwards of $100 a year or if you attend one Jeep Jamboree, you'll easily pay well over $500 for a weekend event.

Also, Lamentation Mt is CLOSED. It is all private land and unless you have written permission from specific landowners, you should not be there.

I don't want to sound too soapboxish... but I'm pretty sure I'm going to... LOL
Please make sure that you just don't go off wheeling where you are unsure if its legal or if you don't have specific permission. We are currently working very closely with the CT state DEP and gov't officials to make more open, legal, public wheeling areas available in CT. By driving in places where we aren't supposed to be, it really hurts our chances of developing these areas. So, again, I'd ask that you check into our local clubs.
You can go to the EC4WDA site
( http://ec4wda.org/regiond/memberclubs.asp ) and check out our Region D Northeast clubs for one that fits your style, experience, etc. If you like some more specific info, please, don't hesitate to ask! Hope to seeya out on the "off highway"...

Thanks fot the input. Back in the UK I was a forestry/woodland (aprox 1000 acres) manager for a number of years, so I am very aware of the negativity & damage caused by illegal and irresponsible wheeling, whether it be on two wheels or four. Along with poachers armed with crossbows and stupid little women on big horses, 4x4s and dirt bikes were a permanent headache that I had to deal with, so I know where you are coming from! I'm looking at joining a club up here in the north east at some point this year. Only been out of NYC for 6 months, busy building up my own tree care company here on Long Island at the moment, so rather busy. Let's talk further, and don't worry about the soap box...........you should hear me when I get a fly up my arse, sorry, ass about something I feel strongly about. Oh, and fyi, I enjoyed riding horses and dirt bikes just as much as the next man/woman! But after 2 herniated and 2 bulging discs those days are over!!
