Like what?
D44 front and rear or a 9.25 in the rear. also 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern common engines 318 and the 360.

yeah i am looking at a 87 ramcharger just wanting to know how strong the axels are that are stock and if they had a factory locker of any type thanks James

The rear could have a trac-lock limited slip if it was ordered. They are OK at best, nothing like a full locker.
Check to make sure the '87 has fuel injection. There was a midyear split between the carbs, and the TBI.
Also be sure to check the frame for rot. They tend to rot worst near the spring hanger brackets.
BTW, how'd you make out with your brakes?
MrZ71
07-09-2006, 12:28 PM
i think that its a carb it is the 318 there does not seem like too much rot on the frame the body is not too bad its a bit beat but im not worried about that only thing id the weight going to have to try to get it down a bit
oh yeah and the breaks still messed up it seems like the abs thing is the problem not sure andy is calling a guy he knows in gm to find out more
thanks

Hhmmm, a carb huh? I avoid those things like the plague now, and you know why. Also, I think that thing weighs in around 5000 lbs. Thats a little big to be pulling with your Z71.
I'm guessing that all 3 masters were good? lol This will sound funny but.......check the caliper slides to make sure they aren't sticking. Compress the piston while they are on the truck, and then grab the caliper and see if you can move it around on it's slides easily, or if it's sticking. Other then that, like I've been saying for weeks, I'm at a loss.

i have found the weight to be around 4200 lbs i dont know how much weight we could trim off the body im up for chopping it up
also how much is my truck rated for ?

6K tops, But you have to subtract the weight of the trailer from that. Most likely 1500 lbs.
Mean Green
07-10-2006, 05:18 PM
Only 6k? Wow I have the grocery getter Durango able to pull 7500 lbs. and that's not considered a work vehicle. You'd think they'd beef up a full size pickup for more.

the z71 is a 1500 so thats why its lacking towing ablity
i am thinking that i will use a dolly thing to tow it does anyone know the laws for towing with a dolly or with tow bars in NY ?
88sub4x4
07-10-2006, 11:37 PM
Either the tow dolly, or the vehicle being flat towed with tow bars will need to have their own braking system if over 2K lbs. A ramcharger will be difficult to tow long distances like that. Most tow bars and dollies have a 5K limit.
Meangreen, not to knock on your truck, but durango's are only good for around 5K. (I know dodge says more, but you need to be realistic) Anything more is a chore to pull, and really takes it's toll on the vehicle. Those 44 and even the 46 trans. don't hold up to the heat too well. Not to mention the weak 9.25 rear. They are great solo, but serious towing is just not it's forte.
Mean Green
07-11-2006, 05:13 PM
Yeah I mean I'm not trying to say I need to tow anything that heavy but all I would need is a tranny cooler to keep the temp down I have the 360 so my engine is up to the task just have to go easy with it at the full weight because chrysler trannies suck balls. take it out of OD and be nice to it. Also I think my truck has better gearing than that, it's the slt model. The only Durango that has better gearing than that is the R/T.

gearing is not trim level specific. you can either have 3.55's or 3.92's. It all depends on what option was chosen when ordered new. The r/t's, and any AWD's, came with the weaker 8.25 axle, so thats a towing disadvantage. And a tranny cooler is a great idea even for non tow rigs.
Mean Green
07-12-2006, 04:37 PM
Yeah it is a good idea for any rig. I'm hoping I can afford one when I am ready to move back out west. I will be towing a uhaul trailer. I imagine it will propably be somewhere in the range of 3000 lbs or a little less the trailer will be the heaviest thing not what I end up putting in it which is stuff I can't bear to get rid of when we go. I've already been through that starting over with nothing stuff and it sucks. Also with the different gearing I saw something on dodgeforum.com about the R/T having better gearing for more torque just for the simple fact that heavy ass Durangos need a lot to get them moving I'm not an expert on gearing by any means and it sounds like you know more about that dept. than me but I do know that I have something in the 250 ft lbs of torques which is decent for my application. anywho I give up lol
*EDIT* We hijacked this thread soooo bad sorry guys.

Go get a late modle dodge and take off the fuel injection for your rig.
88sub4x4
07-20-2006, 12:04 PM
I have a late model intake w/ injectors, as well as a pcm here, but you will need a harness and figure out how to get 60psi for fuel pressure as well. Also would need to get a newer style distributor, and find a way to mount a crank sensor since the late models use the flywheel and have a notch cut in the trans. bellhousing. Alot of work involved.
I still think TBI would be the cheapest most reliable way to go. The 1200 is well worth the quality of their kits. Plus everything is new, you're not running junkyard parts.
MrZ71
07-25-2006, 08:23 AM
the carb is working fine so its running nice but it needs some fuel line work i think that one of the intakes is cloged or rotted away i will find out within one of the up comming days when i drop the tank to check it out so now i am looking into a budget lift so any ideas out there ??? i looked on ramchargercentral had some homemade things so not sure on the direction i want to go yet

i think that i fixed the oil leak i think that it was the valve cover was not tighted enuff i will see if any leaked out tomorow morning
also anyone know towing abltys of a 2000ish F250 or 2500 looking around for a truck with more towing ablty to pull the ramcharger
88sub4x4
07-31-2006, 04:30 AM
Cool, glad you got the door open. The tow rating for a 2000ish 3/4 ton will vary alot depending on how the truck is equipped. Engine, trans, and axle ratio play a big factor. Generally range from 7K to 10K though. If you just want it for towing duty, a 2wd rig will tow more, get better fuel mileage, and be alot cheaper to buy.
Like I said, I will haul the ramcharger on my trailer, and you can pull my jeep with your Z71. The jeep with trailer weighs in at just under 5K, so your truck can handle it. We just need to put that trans. cooler in before we go.

yeah this setup will work for now but i would like to get something that can do it so im starting too look around i have my eclipse to sell and also the truck so i would be able to afford a newer truck if i did that
also we still doing the labor day weekend trip ?
i have a few things to do this weekend so i dont know how free i will be but if i can work on my truck one solid day i will give u a call so you can come on by too probly sunday
MrZ71
07-31-2006, 06:48 PM
also a 2wd truck just seems wrong
88sub4x4
08-01-2006, 02:51 AM
Yeah, we are still on for labor day weekend. I plan to go sat. the 2nd.
If you are using it as a daily driver, then 2wd is out, but for towing use only you get alot more truck for the money.
I have class every day this week including friday, so leave me a message if you know when you are working on it, and I'll try to plan to be there.
Mean Green
08-01-2006, 04:33 PM
Z71 if you're planning on getting a towing rig I think your best bet would to be to go for a ram, you will most likely get the most truck for the $ over chevy or ford and they look a lot better.

Ya Ramcharger do great on the trails, And the pre injection carb is the best thing for off camber. Mine has never had a fuel problem on trails, hillclimbs, of 30deg off camber. From the factory they had A RTI of 608, and the super short wheel base makes some tight turns.
See it was still running just needed a tug

You might want to check you wheel bearings. Mine go all the time with mud holes and water crossings. Autozone sells timkin made in USA for just a little more then the china brand. If you have locking hubs pull the 6 bolts and take a peek in, I have found if water don't come out when you take the hub off you have at least 1 more trip on the grease.
MrZ71
09-27-2006, 04:30 PM
ok well im going to have to look into some of that although i dont have locking hubs but i will look over the wheel bearings

Team Ramrod
10-10-2006, 08:56 PM
It was a good day, Cut a tire, lost a u-joint, and scuffed a fender flare but i didn't do any body damage and i drove it home that night! The group i was in was way too big only did 3 trails and thats if you count turtle as a trail.
