Well for the last few days on my way to work my truck has been smoking at random (maybe not so random?). I think it's after I am driving fast (between 70 and 80) and then have to slow down due to traffic. I get a thick cloud of smoke that is white. Today after seeing it start I pulled over to the shoulder and before I even popped the hood I thought I smelled burning rubber. I opened it up and everything looked to be in order I didn't see any leaks or smoke under there. I don't think this thing has been tuned up could it be that? I'm at a little less than 40k miles and I bought it at 30k. I am going to have my wife follow me on the freeway to tell me whether it is coming from the exhaust or under the truck or what. When I got to work I check my fluids and I'm about a quart low on oil and I just changed it about 800 miles ago. I'm desperate for help I just had the tranny rebuilt at 35k and I hope I don't need to do the same to the engine.

might be leaking oil from the filter. Little drip on a hot exhuast can create an amazing amount of smoke

I just had the temp sensor in the tranny replaced right before this started. I thought maybe it was a leak because there was fluid leaking the day I got it back took it in to them the next day they tightened up the loose bolt no more leak still smoking though. I noticed my undercarriage is pretty greasy I was thinking of getting it washed and see what happens from there.

Blue smoke:
Burning oil
White smoke:
Internal colant leak
Water on exhaust (splashing water, dripping down from a leak somewhere)
Black smoke:
Engine running rich on fuel
Hope this helps. Check all fluid levels. Check your tranny fluid. If you cant figure it out, take it back to shop and demand your truck fixed for free. It seems every time they touch it something else happens. Good luck.

I think I'll check my lower radiator hose tomorrow morning everything else looked dry. i was thinking it was something hitting my exhaust because it's so random. I'm not 100% on it being white my tint is pretty dark it could be a little blue so I'll go through tomorrow with a fine toothed comb. Didn't check the coolant level today too hot and I had to get going.

Check the overflow bottle for level. If its below low line, you might have a problem. Unless it was already below the line... :chin:

:lmao: Overflow bottle is a joke in that thing. That's the way they tell you to fill the truck's coolant I tried and overfilled it and still had to tap in directly to the radiator just to get the level of coolant in it that is needed. It doesn't move a bit but I haven't looked in a while so we'll see.

Well I checked the coolant after work and it is definitely a coolant leak I'm not sure exactly where but I am going to park at autozone tomorrow morning and take care of it. I am 99% sure it's external I smelled my exhaust once I got home and it smelled like exhaust should smell not a hint of sweetness but the engine compartment reeked like coolant. I was just in the cooling system about 5 months ago and the coolant was green now it's all brown and my damned overflow was bone dry so I added to the radiator and overflow and got them to the right levels. I'm going to flush it and refill as well as replace my hoses. So for needing a repair I guess this is the best news I was pretty upset all night at work and I'm just relieved that it isn't anything major.

Your coolant was brown? That's prolly oil that's mixed in it. I know you smelled the exhaust, but maybe it's engine related and oil is getting into the coolant. Maybe have a friend drive behind you and see what it smells like as well as see if tis coming from your tailpipe. These are just assumptions of mine.

The coolant wasn't oily at all it looked like old coolant that has been in the radiator too long. I doubt that the previoous owner ever changed the coolant at all also I haven't found any water in the oil I picked up the necessary things to take care of this problem today and I will be working on it tomorrow.
I am planning on having my wife drive behind me to t ell me where she sees the smoke coming from as well but I would imagine that if it was an engine problem then I would be smoking all the time instead of it being so random. The way I think it's happening is that it's a high pressure leak that is spraying out when I'm running at high rpm's for an extended amount of time the wind is then blowing some of the coolant onto my exhaust or engine but we'll just see after this fix.

Why don't you ask autozone to do a pressure test?? It will find the leak very quickly if you know what you are doing.....

They do pressure tests huh? I guess that's what I'll do tomorrow. I might have to go to the one that isn't 3 blocks away though because they didn't even know about coolant disposal so I can only imagine the dumbfounded look I'll get for asking about a pressure test :lmao: .

normally well 99% of the time, the reason that coolant will be brown is when the cool isn't changed in some time, and rust from the inside of the radiator dissolves into the fluid. If you got oil leaking into your coolant, you've got some huge problems and chances are you will probably know about it already.
My guess if your worried about the cool, do a flush on the coolant and full her back up. Though it won't fix your smoking problem, well that is unless your running too hot.

Yeah I know about that. I changed the thermostat 4 months ago and it looked good but since it is now brown I am going to change it on monday after a pressure test. BTW I haven't smoked since I put this thread up I don't get it. :duh:
