View Full Version : Shake, rattle, and no roll so good

So, in the last week or so, I've noticed a lot of drivetrain slack... esp. when going from forward to reverse. My u-joints are about dead, but I was saving my nickles for an SYE and new shaft. At any rate, things have gotten worse.

Hitting fifth gear on the way home (which I can finally do again now that I re-geared to 4.10s), there was a pretty good vibration coming through the shifter, and an almost bearing-noise rattle coming from the floor. For the rest of the drive home, I kept it in 4th, which seemed to reduce the rattle, and then played with it in the driveway when I got home. With the t-case in neutral, and pouring throught the gears, there is a definite rattle that gets worse with output shaft speed.

Anyway, I haven't spent much time trying to diagnose (work cuts into fun time), but thought I'd see if anyone had any experience/ideas. I've been through a trans before in my old jeep (remember the peugot trannies? Don't take a harsh montana winter well), and this rattle seems different from the time that I had a busted reverse idler.

Anybody ever dived into a trans? Or should I start looking for a new one?

Thanks for whatever help you can provider... I'd love to get it ironed out before the trip on the weekend of the 4th!

are you confident it is in the trans? is there a possability it could be in the t-case?

I haven't completely ruled that out yet, but with the t-case in neutral, it still give's the rattle/whine. So, it could be on the input side of the the case...

Yes. if the output on the trans is spinning even with the t-case in neutral the panetary is still spinning.
