 looking for a place near southern NY to go wheeling on a beach. Just some running around in the sand. Maybe throw a fishing pole in the back, oh and the old lady too.

Check out LIBBA on this site:

That's what they're supposedly all about. Responsibly driving the beaches of Long Island.
They also have a link to the top 100 fishing sites:

Good Luck

Just a note on the Long Island beaches. You need to apply for the permit early in the year. I think the cut off date may be March 31 and I think it is around $50 give or take $5 or $10. Also, depending on where you go, you NEED to have everything on the list because the permit is actually a fishing permit. So you need fishing poles, tackle, bait, as well as as other stuff like a port-a-potty and recovery equipment like a jack and wood to put it on for jacking. They are very strict. I have heard of people losing their permits for not having all of the required stuff. Also, you are only allowed access to the beach before 7am and after 5pm. I found a place that the permit is required but no one is there enforcing it and you can enter/exit at any time. I think at Smith's Point beach, you can buy a day pass and it is just for hanging out. Fishing gear is not required. I heard that they also have tanks so you can air up on your way out.
