wailt, I'm as new here as the snow we got yesterday in Middletown. Picked up an 88 YJ couple years ago for fishin in outta they way places. That gave me the bug, so here I am. Been doing some modifications, she's not right just yet. Wont be getting Stuck anymore, lol. Anyone know the right way to swap out the 4.2 for a 350 small block? Wiring harness, tranny adapter, stuff like that. Real help would be appreciated. TIA

Hi and welcome to the site!

What tranny are you trying to run? Do you know how to weld and do some fabricating? What t-case are you going to use? TPI or TBI or Carb 350?

Answer some of these and I and other can help out.

Hi Xeon,

The small block will be carb'd, far as I know, from what I've been told changing over to fuel injection requires alot of extra stuff. The tranny is a Chrysler A-904, stamped 9490 which isnt the original. The transfer case is the NP 231, and a slip yoke eliminator has been installed. So far, I've lifted the jeep 3.5 inches, added 33" T-rex tires. New bumpers and a winch, which has already paid for itself on a few occasions. The engine is shot though, it runs, gets me to and from. Vacuum leak in the carb, leak in the exhaust manifold, leaks oil and the exhaust pipes have been crunched a few times, lol, (pre-lift days). Still waiting to install a Power Trac locker in the rear. A friend of mine who has a auto body shop (Wrights Restorations) has been helping me, but doesnt know alot about conversions. I'd love to go wheeling with you guys, just dont think the motor will perform as needed. Nothing like getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, been there, its not fun. Advice is welcomed.

If you still have stock rear Dana 35, dont lock it. Throw it away and put a Dana 44, Ford 9", Ford 8.8 or others under there. With that 350, it will blow it up on the trails locked or unlocked.

Motor mounts, give Advanced Adaptors, or Novak Adaptors a call and they will tell you what you need, if you can weld, you want to get the non cradle mounts, if you can or know someone that can. Get the weld on brackets, which are stronger and better.

Wiring, since its carb you just need 12V to the distributor, and 12V to the alternator I think and power and ignition to start and you are set. Very little wiring for the carbed motor.

Not sure the length of the tranny, but I would assume its different so you will need custom sized driveshafts front and rear.

This is all I got for now. Someone else might chim in. Hope this helps out!
